The benefits of automation will outweigh the pain of change. But you will have to leave your comfort zone.
The 2014 Paystream Advisors survey on Travel & Expense Management asked organisations using manual systems, to rank the reasons why they haven’t automated the T&E process. The stand out winner with 40% of the vote was ‘Current processes work’
What they are really saying is that they are ‘comfortable’ with their current process and they are avoiding the pain associated with change. People like ‘comfortable’. Comfortable, represents familiarity and familiarity represents safety. Pain on the other hand is associated with danger, so we naturally try to shy away from it whenever we can.
What these companies are missing out on are the opportunities for improving performance and productivity that can be gained by change. In the case of expense management this would include cost and time efficiencies, increased policy compliance and real-time visibility into T&E spend that manual systems are simply unable to deliver.
It’s well known that change can be hard for people to accept but without the ability to adapt and grow, productivity will stall and stagnate. The old Texas adage sums it up perfectly; ‘If all you ever do is all you've ever done, then all you'll ever get is all you ever got’.
